LAWRENCE, MA (WSHM) - A man who police say tried to kill a Massachusetts state trooper by dragging him alongside his car tried take the trooper's handgun from him during an altercation early Friday morning.

State police pulled over a Honda minivan on Bailey Street for motor vehicle violations at about 2:30 a.m. The driver, later identified as Kenneth Figueroa, 21, of Lawrence, fled on foot. He jumped over several fences, crossed yards and then circled back towards the minivan.

As Trooper Douglas Dolan closed in on Figueroa, he leaped into the driver's seat of the vehicle, which was still running.

Figueroa struck Dolan in the chin with his fist as he tried to stop him from fleeing. He then put the vehicle in gear and sped away, dragging Dolan beside the vehicle.

Dolan was able to pull himself inside the van and on top of Figueroa as the two fought for control of the vehicle. At that point the van swerved off the road, jumped a curb and became wedged on an incline leading up to the front porch of a house on Bailey Street.

The van's wheels continued to spin while Dolan attempted to restrain Figueroa.

During the fight, police say Figueroa struck Dolan numerous times. He then opened his center console and began to reach for a silver handgun he had inside the compartment.

Dolan drew his gun and Figueroa began to fight for control of that weapon. He was eventually able to gain control of Figueroa and he was placed into custody.

Police found a Davis Industries Model P-380 loaded with five rounds of ammunition inside of the van. Troopers also found 13 bags of cocaine, four bags of heroin and three bags of marijuana, according to an arrest report.

Police also found a collection of burglarious tools inside the van.

Figueroa was charged with attempted murder, assault to murder with a firearm, assault and battery on a police officer, resisting arrest, possession of a firearm while committing a felony, illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition, reckless operation of a motor vehicle, possession of burglarious tools, possession with intent to distribute heroin, possession with intent to distribute cocaine and possession with intent to distribute marijuana.
