State Street was reopened at about 4 p.m. after a water main break in the area of Willow Street caused the roadway to flood, forcing police to close the road down for about three hours on Monday afternoon.
The water main break that occurred at about 1:30 p.m. caused a gaping sinkhole near 141 State St.
An eight inch pipe, which officials say was an older pipe, burst and caused the roadway to flood. Only a few buildings were without water, but most businesses in the area were not impacted.
The Springfield Water & Sewer Commission stabilized the area and contained the water flow. Repairs to the road are ongoing.
