West Springfield officials declare emergency situation following water main break

Posted: Updated:
WEST SPRINGFIELD, MA (WSHM) - Parts of Main Street in West Springfield have been closed due to a water main break Tuesday morning.

Jeff Auer, Deputy Director of Water for the West Springfield Department of Public Works, said officials have declared an emergency situation for the immediate area because they say they are unsure when the problem will be fixed and the water will be turned back on. The declaration was also made in order to secure funds for repairs and for people who were without water.

Big Y World Class Market has begun delivering gallons of water to approximately 50 homes that were without water on Tuesday.

West Springfield Police tell CBS 3 that Main street will be blocked entirely between the area of Chapin Street and New Bridge Street for a majority of the day.

Crews from the West Springfield Water Department are on scene and have begun work to repair the break.

Officials say the break could even affect the evening commute.
