NORTHAMPTON, MA (WSHM) - Since 1966, National Eat Ice Cream for Breakfast Day has been a tradition for some.

Herrell's Ice Cream in Northampton sponsored an event on Saturday to Benefit Whole Children.

The event was scheduled to run from 9 a.m. to noon but the line kept growing.

“We had almost 300 tickets in the register by 10 a.m.,” Judy Herrell, president and owner of Herrell's Ice Cream said. “We were expecting to have 300 people in total come out to support!”

Herrell thanks local organizations and the constant ‘sharing' on social media websites.

“What has happened across the country and in some other countries as well now is it becomes a day to give back to non-profits in the community that work with children," Herrell said.

"Helping these children that sometimes get forgotten and shouldn't,” Hallie Baldwin from Haydenville said. “It warms your heart and they're letting us eat ice cream!"

This was the first year that Herrell's Ice Cream had participated in the world wide event.

Herrell's has been in business since 1980 and boasts over 300 flavors of Ice Cream.
