Montague police, fire respond to partially collapsed roof

MONTAGUE, MA (WSHM) -

Montague police and Turners Falls firefighters responded to Second Street for a partially collapsed roof on a porch on Thursday morning.

Crews responded to the home at 69 Second St., after a they were notified of the collapse by a letter carrier. Firefighters worked to take snow off the roof and police put caution tape around the unstable roof.

Police say residents in the home live on the second and third floor and that they were advised of the situation.

The Montague building inspector responded and found nothing wrong with the building itself, aside from the porch.

The family was not displaced and there were no injuries.

The Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency has received more than 70 reports of roof collapses, partial collapses or major structural issues since Feb. 9, and that doesn't account for those that have not been reported, spokesman Chris Besse said.

In New Hampshire, more than 500 residents were displaced after two partial collapses at an eight-building apartment complex in Portsmouth, and schools in Epping and Newton were closed Tuesday after cracks appeared in the walls.
