HOLYOKE, MA (WSHM) - Firefighters extinguished a kitchen fire in a third-floor apartment at 528 South Bridge Street in Holyoke on Saturday morning which ultimately led to the discovery of a marijuana growing operation.

Holyoke Fire Capt. Anthony Cerruti said firefighters discovered the grow operation while tending to a fire that was contained in the kitchen.

Holyoke Police Sgt. Joseph Garcia told CBS 3 that an entire rear-bed of a pickup truck was filled with marijuana plants after being removed from the apartment with a hand-cart.

Cerruti said the apartment, which was vacant upon arrival, suffered heavy fire and smoke damage while the fire itself was contained to the rear of the building and had been knocked down quickly.

Sgt. Garcia said no arrests have been made as the incident is currently under investigation by both Holyoke police and fire departments.
