The State Fire Marshals office tells CBS 3 as of Wednesday afternoon they are still investigating the cause of an afternoon fire at 416 Silver Street in Agawam.

Officials confirmed the fire had started in the basement of the home and have ruled the blaze as accidental. Investigators believe that a potential electrical malfunction may be to blame.

Agawam Fire Chief Alan Sirois told CBS 3 that shortly after 1 p.m. on Tuesday, crews were called to 416 Silver Street for reports of smoke coming from a furnace. However, when crews arrived the fire was quickly upgraded to a full basement fire.

“Units responded and found a very difficult to access and persistent fire in the basement,” Sirois said. “It took almost 30 minutes under control.”

Chief Sirois says a roof in the basement had collapsed.

One firefighter was transported to an area hospital for non-life threatening injuries.

The Massachusetts State Fire Marshals office was on scene shortly after 4 p.m. conducting a portion of the investigation.

Agawam received mutual aid assistance from West Springfield fire department and a Springfield fire department rehab truck.
