The Chicopee Water Department has seen a rapid increase in calls this winter season regarding frozen water services.

According to Chicopee Water Department Superintendent Alan Starzyk, the department usually gets around ten calls a winter but in the last few weeks alone, they have received around 100 calls.

Starzyk said crews have gotten behind on fixing problems because there have been so many.

Officials are asking for public's patience while the problems are being addressed. 95% of the calls have been for problems in front of homes and on the street.

The department uses a few different methods to clear pipes depending on the situation.

Starzyk said that residents can do a few things on their own to limit potential problems including insulating water pipes in home and running water at a drip.

CBS 3 Springfield's Hugh Zeitlin will have a LIVE report coming up First at 4 p.m.
