Springfield Police responded to a grocery store on Tuesday morning for a reported stabbing.
Springfield Police Sgt. John Delaney said officers responded to Paola Grocery at 74 Eastern Avenue before 9 a.m. to find a 53-year-old male suffering from a stab wound to the left side of his face.
Before being transported to a local hospital, the victim spoke with police and stated he was in the store when a subject became irate and began arguing with people.
Police say the victim claimed he had attempted to disarm the subject and during the altercation the man was stabbed in the face.
"The stab wound was a deep laceration," Delaney said.
Detectives are continuing to investigate as no arrests have been made.
The stab victim is said to be in critical condition.
