City of Chicopee reimbursed for 2011 snowstorm

Posted: Updated:

The City of Chicopee has been granted reimbursement funds from Massachusetts Department of Transportation for the October 2011 snowstorm that left a majority of Western Massachusetts without power.

Chicopee Mayor Richard Kos announced the city will receive $933,971.16 from MassDOT.

"I am glad the City will be receiving this money,” Kos said. “It will essentially be used to pay for snow bills in future years. This year's expense has already surpassed $1.3 million."

The funds are from the Federal Highway Administration's Emergency Relief Program and will defray costs of cleanup from the 2011 storm.

However, the reimbursement won't be available to the City until the State of Massachusetts certifies free cash in fiscal year 2016.
