A woman died early Saturday morning after a vehicle she was driving left the roadway and hit a telephone pole.
Dennis Leger, aide to Springfield Fire Commissioner Joseph Conant told CBS 3 that Springfield fire department responded to the area of 475 St. James Avenue shortly after 5:30 a.m.
Upon arrival, personnel found a Nissan Maxima with heavy damage and two victims trapped inside.
Springfield Police Sgt. John Delaney told CBS 3 the female driver was pronounced dead on scene and a 28-year-old male passenger was unresponsive upon police arrival.
“It took nearly 40 minutes just to get him out,” Leger said regarding the male passenger. “We had to use two sets of ‘jaws'.”
The male passenger was transported to Baystate Medical Center with serious injuries. He is in stable condition, Delaney said.
The Springfield Police Traffic and Reconstruction Team was on scene continuing to investigate the crash under the direction of Sgt. Steven Wyszynski, Delaney said.
