Two local gang members were arrested by Springfield police overnight when officers heard several gun shots fired and witnessed vehicles speeding past them on State Street.
Springfield Police Sgt. John Delaney told CBS 3 that two officers were on patrol at the corner of State and Colonial Streets shortly after 2:15 a.m. on Saturday when they began pursuit of a motor vehicle.
Officers smelled gunpowder in the air and observed several bullet holes in the driver side fender of a vehicle, Delaney said.
Police chased a vehicle through several streets before multiple occupants from the car jumped out and ran into St. Michael Cemetery on Boston Road.
After a perimeter was set, two individuals were taken into custody.
Police recovered shell casings in the shooters vehicle, however, a gun was not recovered after police searched the cemetery and an area of interest on Bay Street.
Gilfrey Gregory, of Maynard Street, and Troy Harris, of Eastern Street, are identified by Springfield Police as “local gang members with prior firearms charges,” were arrested for breach of the peace while armed and possession of a loaded firearm without a license.
