Police have identified the man they say fatally stabbed a 29-year-old woman and seriously injured two others in lower Forest Park during the early morning hours of March 11.
Springfield police Sgt. John Delaney said the department currently holds a warrant for 46-year-old Erick L. Buchanon on charges of murder, two counts of assault with intent to murder and assault and battery by means of a dangerous weapon.
Police were called to 356 Belmont Ave. for the report of a stabbing and a domestic related disturbance at about 12:50 p.m. Police found 29-year-old Salina Meritt at that address dead from stab wounds, Delaney said.
While responding to that call, two other 911 calls were placed for victims who police say were also stabbed during the melee. They were able to get away from the suspect and made were on Fairfield Street and lower Belmont Avenue.
Officers and paramedics assisted a 27-year-old female victim on Fairfield Street and a 29-year-old male victim on lower Belmont Avenue who were seriously injured. Both victims stated that they were stabbed at 356 Belmont Ave.
“Detectives under the direction of Lt. Thomas Kennedy responded and preserved the scene and did a thorough job gathering forensic evidence and getting information on the suspect,” Delaney said. “Within hours the detectives were looking for the person responsible.”
Delaney said Buchanon is somewhere in Western Massachusetts and could be armed and dangerous.
