West Springfield police have identified two of the three suspects after a breaking and entering ended up leading to two men jumping off the North End Bridge.
Capt. Spaulding tells CBS 3 that just after 1 p.m. Tuesday officers responded to the west end of Rt. 20 in West Springfield for reports of a breaking and entering after witnesses saw two men carrying a safe from behind a home there.
Witnesses also described a black Cadillac with CT plates that made off with the safe and suspects.
Spaulding said officers responded to the residence and found evidence of the break-in. Officers then discovered the Cadillac on Park Street and followed it as it headed toward the North End bridge.
Officers gave chase from either ends of the bridge. The woman driving the Cadillac pulled off to the right, while two men in the car ran across the bridge. Police surrounded and Spaulding says the two jumped over the side of the bridge.
Springfield, West Springfield, State and Agawam police searched from the shores of the CT River as rescue boats were launched to try and find the men.
They successfully rescued Jonathan Lopez, 28, of Springfield. He was taken to Baystate Medical Center and then released into police custody.
The other man was never found after hours of searching. Spaulding says the department is withholding his identity until his family is notified.
Meantime, the female driver identified as Mercedes Rosado, 31, of New Britain, CT, was arrested without incident.
The two arrested face charges of breaking and entering in daytime with intent to commit felony, larceny over $250 and receiving stolen property over $250.
Lopez also faces a resisting arrest charge and malicious destruction of property over $250.
They are both being held without bail until an arraignment Wednesday morning in Springfield District Court.
