High school sports have been delayed several weeks because of the snow but spring has finally sprung for Minnechaug girls lacrosse as they hit the field Tuesday to kick off their season.

While it may cause some boredom from time to time for Minnechaug goalie Molly Fitzgerald, she is certainly thankful for the falcons potent offensive that lead them to an 18-3 record last season.

“It's fantastic knowing that whenever the ball is down there I don't have to worry about the ball all of a sudden switching fields,” said Fitzgerald. “Sometimes it can get a little boring but at other times it is exciting when it finally comes to me. I finally get to see the ball come down the field and I get excited.”

Lead by last year's Western Mass top scorer Liz Mastrio, Minnechaug girl's lacrosse is one of the top ranked teams in the region thanks in large part to their balanced skill set. While they can score at will, Molly's dominance in goal plays a huge part in their success.

I have all the trust in the world in molly,” said Mastrio. “She is unlike any other person that I have ever met. I have complete confidence in her as I know she has my back and she's just a great part of the team.”

Chaug opened up their season with a decisive 15-0 win over West Springfield this week. Mastrio lead the way with four goals and three assists. In her senior season, Liz has seen her role expand to more than just finding the back of the net.

“I think my role is to definitely lead and to help the players below me as much as I can so that we can be the best team that we can be,” said Mastrio. “Helping learn how we can work best with each other and just to keep things light. Keep it fun.”

The falcons have a tough schedule ahead of them but look to build off their experiences last season and utilize veteran leadership as they take on the best teams Western Mass has to offer.

“We are looking forward to the harder games this year,” said Fitzgerald. “We have a much harder schedule than we did last year so with that we will be able to improve on our skills and I think we will be able to go all the way if we play hard.”
