The Springfield Police Department's newest K-9 located an alleged burglar that was hiding in a closet early Wednesday morning.

Springfield police Sgt. John Delaney said officers responded to 36 Oak St. at about 4:30 a.m. for the report of a burglary in progress.

Police entered the home after noticing signs of forced entry. Officers were confronted with one of the burglars who was attempting to leave the house.

The suspect, Randolph "The Preacher" Lester, was well known by police. The 74-year-old man was taken into custody without incident.

K-9 Officer Eric Blair and his partner "Warner" then entered the house in search of the second suspect.

"Warner" checked the house and within no time he alerted police to the second suspect hiding in a closet on the second floor.

Police charged William Brown, 37, of 2456 North Pleasant St., Amherst, and Randolph Lester, of Woodside Terrace, Springfield, with breaking and entering at night for a felony.

Both suspect were arraigned in Springfield District Court Wednesday.
