Two killed in Holyoke car crash

HOLYOKE, MA (WGGB/WSHM) -

Western Mass News learned Friday morning that two people are now dead as a result of a crash that closed a portion of Route 5 on Thursday night.

Holyoke police Lt. Jim Albert confirmed that the accident, which was a head-on collision, occurred in the area of 671 Northampton St. (Route 5) at 9:24 p.m.

Albert said while one of the driver's died in the crash. Another person, believed to be an older male, was trapped in one of the vehicles and emergency crews extricated the man.

After initially suffering serious injuries, police told Western Mass News that man has died.

Those victims have been identified as 50-year-old George Rios and 71-year-old Jimmy Wright, both of Holyoke.

Route 5 re-opened to traffic around 2 a.m. on Friday.
