WESTFIELD, MA (WGGB/WSHM) -
"Today is about memories, today is about memorializing all those selfless sacrifices that these 13 people have done for not only our county and our commonwealth but for our community," Maj. Gen. Scott Rice said. "It brings us together and makes us stronger."
The 104th Fighter Wing at Barnes Air National Guard Base honored fallen heroes Sunday afternoon in Westfield.
Lt. Col Morris Fontenot Jr is the most recent unit member to pass away in an aviation related incident.
"Morris 'Moose' Fontenot was a part of our heart and sole," Rice said.
"He wasn't here very for long so it's not like he had two or three years to establish these relationships but the impact he had on them (unit) and the impact they had on him must have been phenomenal," Mary Jane Fontenot, mother of Morris Fontenot Jr. said.
Fontenot died on August 27th, 2014 when the aircraft he was piloting crashed in Virginia during a test flight.
"He was a leader," Morris Fontenot Sr. said. "Morris was an honest person, reach out and help anyone if he could."
The 104th Fighter Wing honored 13 airmen in total. Four families were represented on Sunday.
