Shots fired near AIC campus in Springfield

SPRINGFIELD, MA (WGGB/WSHM) -

Police are investigating a shooting that took place just one block from the American International College campus Friday night.

Officers responded to 49 Wilbraham Ave. at about 8:45 p.m. after the city's ShotSpotter activation system indicated shots had been fired in the area, according to Springfield police Sgt. Lawrence Murphy.

Murphy said multiple shots were fired towards the house at 49 Wilbraham Ave., which is roughly a quarter of a mile from the AIC campus. 

Police at the scene confirmed to Western Mass News that five gunshots were fired and that shell casings were recovered.

No alert was sent out to AIC students Friday night.
