SPRINGFIELD, MA (WGGB/WSHM) -

A Springfield man has died from injuries he sustained after getting shot in the head earlier this week.

Springfield Police Sgt. John Delaney identified the victim as 28-year-old Bernard Collado.

On Monday, May 18 shortly after 5 p.m. Officers were called to the intersection of Murray Hill Avenue and Franklin Street to investigate a shooting.

There they found Bernard suffering from a gunshot wound to his head. He was rushed to Baystate Medical Center in Springfield in critical condition and was placed on life support.

Detectives “conducted an extensive investigation all week,” said Sgt. Delaney who added that Collado died Saturday evening at about 10 p.m..

The shooting “does not appear to be random and the victim was the intended target,” explained Sgt. Delaney,” The motive appears to be gang related.”

The Springfield police Commissioner John Barbieri has offered his condolences to Collado's family calling this “a senseless loss of life.”

Extra patrols have been put in the area to “make the citizens in that neighborhood feel safe,” noted Sgt. Delaney. The extra patrols were ordered by Commissioner Barbieri.

The death of Collado is now being investigated as a homicide. Police have not said whether or not they have any suspects in this case.
