SPRINGFIELD, MA (WGGB/WSHM) - Family and friends worked to raise funds for a 16-year-old boy after he was hit by a car back in March.

Tonight's event over in Springfield was one of many events that have been held to create awareness surrounding the incident, which badly injured Alex Scafuri.

Alex was hit by a drunk driver in Agawam while skateboarding home from high school volleyball tryouts on March 17th.

The driver left the scene after committing the crime.

Alex has been in pediatric intensive care since the accident. He suffered several broken bones and is currently paralyzed from the chest down with very limited movement in his right arm.

"We look at this this way, you know kids are like motorcycles now a days, people don't see them. The bouncing ball that goes out they don't realize the kids are following," said Jeff Ottomaniello.

The benefit was held on Main Street in the Indian Orchard neighborhood of Springfield.

The Eternal Misfits Motorcycle Group held today's free cookout and accepted donations on behalf of team Alex.
