CHICOPEE, MA (WGGB/WSHM) -

Some residents in Chicopee were without water service following an emergency shut-off Thursday.

The Chicopee mayor's office said in a Facebook post that "a scheduled shut off on Olivene Street and Yvonne Street has resulted in an emergency situation causing an additional area of streets and homes have water shut off."

Chicopee Water Superintendent Alan Starzyk added that the work began as a scheduled shut-off as part of a new water main project. As part of that work, crews have to connect the new main to the existing main, so that scheduled shut-off was needed.

However, Starzyk explained that when crews went to close the shut-off valves, one valve didn't work, prompting the expanded shut-off to an area of Chicopee and Whitman streets.

Water service resumed early Thursday evening.
