Springfield officer injured in I-91 cruiser crash

Posted: Updated:

A Springfield police cruiser was involved in a crash along a busy highway Thursday morning.

Springfield Police Sgt. John Delaney said that an officer was responding to an emergency call in Indian Orchard around 10 a.m. Thursday and in an effort to get to that scene quicker, the officer was going to take I-91 to I-291.

That officer was then involved in a crash with another vehicle and a tractor trailer on I-91 north, near the Hampden County Hall of Justice.

The officer, whom Delaney described as a veteran of the department and its traffic division, had to be extricated from the cruiser and was taken to Baystate Medical Center,

"The police officer is fine and is talking. He might have a broken leg," Delaney said.

A civilian was also injured in the crash.  That person was also taken to an area hospital with injuries that are described as non-life-threatening.

Motorists should expect delays along I-91, near I-291, as police continue to investigate the incident.

Delaney noted that the Massachusetts State Police is taking over the investigation, with assistance from the Springfield Police Department.
