EASTHAMPTON, MA (WGGB/WSHM) -

The Easthampton Community Center recently lost its funding from the city. Nearly 1,000 families turn to the center for help.

Today, 16-year-old Courtney Cowen held a canned food drive and clothing event to benefit the organization.

Instead of a party this year for her birthday, she told her mother she wanted to do something different.

"My mom asked me what I wanted to do for my birthday, and at first I wanted a sweet 16. But, then I realized I kind of have everything I want. I don't really need anything. And then I realized that there were people out, in the streets and stuff, that don't really have stuff. So, I was like why not donate clothes to homeless people," said Cowen.

The city has come up with a way to fund the Community Center's Summer Children's Meal program.

251 children, benefit from the program.

Courtney has set up a go fund me page online with a goal of $2,000 to assist.
