Regreen Springfield replants trees destroyed by tornado

SPRINGFIELD, MA (WGGB/WSHM) -

Community members join Regreen Springfield to help beautify one south end neighborhood. Regreen Springfield works to promote reforestation throughout the city to help make neighborhoods better places to live.

The group gathered this morning on Central Street.

The goal of today's planting was to restore the tree canopy that was destroyed in the June 2011 tornado.

"Especially after the tornado, I think it's good to try and replant some of these trees and I mean, I think it's good for the community around here," said volunteer Dominic Savoie.

The planting wrapped up just before the city's first Neighbor Fest in the South End, which was held to engage neighbors and businesses with police to create safer neighborhoods.
