Pedestrian fatally struck by vehicle on I-291 in Springfield identified

SPRINGFIELD, MA (WGGB/WSHM) -

A pedestrian that was fatally struck by a vehicle on Interstate 291 in Springfield Friday night has been identified.

State police said the pedestrian was identified as 58-year-old Ramon Aguilara-Osorio of Springfield.

Troopers along with AMR Ambulance and the MassDOT all responded to Interstate 291 westbound prior to the I-91 interchange just before 10 p.m. Friday.

State police said Aguilara-Osorio was walking when he was struck on I-291 westbound near exit 3. Police say a 48-year-old woman was driving the 2008 Honda Odyssey that hit him.

He was pronounced dead at the scene. The woman driving the Odyssey was taken to Mercy Hospital in Springfield for treatment.

The left lane of I-291 was closed down while troopers investigated the incident.

It's not clear yet why this person was out on the highway. No charges have been filed at this time.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation by the State Police and the Hampden County District Attorney's Office.
