Emergency crews repair gas leak in Springfield

SPRINGFIELD, MA (WGGB/WSHM) -

Emergency crews were called to Allen Street in Springfield Saturday afternoon for a gas leak.

Springfield Fire Department spokesperson Dennis Ledger told Western Mass News they were called to the area around 1:30PM Saturday for a strong smell of gas in the area.

Crews had to wait for power to be shut off to access Allen Street before they could begin working on the leak itslef.

Approximately 20 people were evacuated from nearby businesses.

Andrea Luppi, Communications & Community Relations Manager for Columbia Gas, says crews were on scene to both detect and fix the leak, which appeared to be coming from manhole covers.

The gas leak was repaired after some time and crews were able to clear the scene.
