Emergency crews remain on scene on Hickory Street after a gas leak Saturday night forced authorities to shut down the area to drivers.

It's the same area other natural gas leaks have occurred over the past few weeks including on Allen Street

At about 7:30 p.m. Saturday a strong smell of gas was reported coming from a manhole cover.  Crews were called to the intersection of Walnut Street and Hickory Street, just down the hill from the Elias Brookings School.

Columbia Gas and Eversource both responded to the scene to work on the issue.  An official from Columbia Gas told Western Mass News the line is slated for repairs and crews have been replacing other lines nearby.

Roads in the area remained closed Sunday morning to allow crews to continue working on repairs.  No word yet when that work will be completed.   At about 7 a.m. the Springfield police department told us they expect it will be several more hours at least.
