A Chicopee police officer who suffered injuries in a head-on collision with another driver who died as a result of the crash, has been released from the hospital.

Officer Joseph Pieczarka was sent home Saturday. He was at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield and is now recovering from numerous lacerations as well as a head injury.

The crash happened Saturday shortly after 2 a.m. on Front Street in Chicopee.  The driver of the Mercury Mountaineer that hit the Chicopee police cruiser Pieczarka was driving, has been identified as 37-year-old Richard Chapin from Chicopee.

"Preliminary reports show that Mr. Chapin crossed over and into Officer Pieczarka's lane, and struck him head on," explained Chicopee police Officer Mike Wilk.

The force of the impact pushed the cruiser into the parking lot of city hall.

A state police accident reconstruction team was called to the scene to investigate and they remained on site for several hours before clearing.

"We are awaiting full report when MSP concludes their investigation,” Wilk said in a post to the department's Facebook page Sunday morning.

Following the crash both Officer Pieczarka and Chapin were rushed to Baystate Medical Center in Springfield.   Chapin later died from injuries he had sustained in the accident.
