WEST SPRINGFIELD, MA (WGGB/WSHM) -

Road work projects are expected to shut down major roadways in the region. The closures are likely to impact evening and morning commutes.

The work began Friday evening and will last until early Tuesday morning. During the shutdown, several roads are also closed including all traffic on the memorial bridge. Route 5 from the North End and South End bridges as well as the Route 5 North and Southbound ramps to Memorial Avenue Eastbound.

There will be several detours in place to lead traffic away from the area and reduce congestion on Route 20 and Route 5.

"Well, you really have to try and figure out the back way or an alternate way or some other way because it's just too ridiculous to go the way you'd like to go," said Jay Smith from Southampton

Construction on I-91-viaduct officially kicks off Sunday night as well. Mass DOT crews will be preparing the outside lanes of the viaduct deck.

Mass DOT officials say that work will most likely be done overnight. But, they advise drivers to keep an eye out for lane closures.
