A house fire in Palmer is under investigation and authorities say they are considering it suspicious.

Firefighters responded to 258 Breckenbridge Street around 8 p.m. on Thursday. Crews remained on the scene for a number of hours until about 1 a.m.

The fire was first spotted by a firefighter who "happened to be going by" at the time.

Palmer fire Captain David Pranaitis told Western Mass News, "It's been labeled suspicious...there's no power sources available to cause ignition."

The fire started in the first floor back kitchen area of the vacant home which "hasn’t been lived in in quite some time," explained Captain Pranaitis.

Firefighters working on extensive overhaul had to be cautious because the house is old and part of it was caving in.  The fire also made its way into the attic.

The state Fire Marshall's Office was called to the scene to investigate.  They continued their investigation on Friday.

No injuries were reported.
