The long Labor Day weekend is upon us and some 30 million travelers are expected to hit the highways.and as they do there's a pleasant surprise at the pumps.
The highways were busy today and so were the gas pumps as people filled their tanks taking advantage of the lowest gas prices in years.
Western Mass News found a number of stations where gas was selling at $2.19 a gallon. That's much less than the national average of $2.44 a gallon according to AAA.
Why the low prices?
There's been a decline in oil prices this year and high crude production both in the U.S. and overseas.
Triple a says gas prices have dropped 9 cents a gallon in a week and are one-dollar below what they were last labor day weekend. On the down side those low gas prices will likely result in more travelers on the roads this weekend.
