The top high school football teams in Western Mass. were tested in the third week of the season, all fighting for position in their respective conferences.
All eyes were on East Longmeadow Friday night, where the Longmeadow Lancers were hoping to build upon last week's one-point win over Holyoke. However, the Spartans got things going early. Senior running back Mike Maggipinto punched in the game's first score, before quarterback Tristan Longmoore found tight end Riley Held for a 50-yard touchdown.
The Lancers answered with a touchdown pass to Max Stukalin and the back-and-forth game began. Stukalin would go on to run for three more touchdowns, the last of which put the Lancers in the lead. On the Spartan side, Maggipinto set a team record by rushing for 203 yards and three scores. But it took a last-minute stand by the Lancers defense to seal the victory in another dramatic installment in the rivalry. Longmeadow came away with the 49-45 win. Next week, Longmeadow will travel to Central to face the Golden Eagles, who got the better of Holyoke 23-20 on Thursday night.
Elsewhere in the AA Conference, Minnechaug got the better of West Springfield 46-30, after posting 27 points on the Terriers defense in the second quarter alone.
