Mid-Week heavy rain on the way

SPRINGFIELD, MA (WGGB/WSHM) -

Our weather pattern is about to change in a big way! Get ready for the rain! Having said that tooday will be mostly dry, aside from a couple of showers and an evening thunderstorm. The steady, heavy rain moves in later tonight through tomorrow morning.

There's only a couple of showers around now and we are not expecting a ton of rain today, in fact we'll have many hours of dry conditions. We may even see a bit of sunshine from time to time. It will be warm with highs well in the 70s. If we see enough sunshine we could touch 80! Couple this with dew points in the 60s and this afternoon will have a summer-time feel to it.

A cold front will continue to move our way. Out ahead of this front a southerly flow off the Atlantic will increase, helping to bring in the  warm, moist air.  As the front draws closer it will squeeze out the building moisture in the form of heavy rain tonight into tomorrow morning.  In fact, The National Weather Service has issued a Flood Watch for all of western Mass. for tonight through Thursday morning. It looks as though we could pick up 1-3"+ of rain with the bulk of it falling from midnight through noon tomorrow. This will lead to some ponding on roadways and flooding in areas of poor drainage. The rain will likely taper to showers tomorrow afternoon. It will be cooler tomorrow with temperatures more seasonable, in the 60s.

Thursday may begin rain-free, but end showery with another round of heavy rain possible Friday into Saturday. This second round of rain will likely be enhanced by Tropical Storm Joaquin, our 10th named Atlantic tropical system. Right now Joaquin is spinning between Florida and Bermuda.
