Coldest temps of the season arrive for weekend

Posted: Updated:
SPRINGFIELD, MA (WGGB/WSHM) -

We'll see a mixture of sunshine and clouds this afternoon. The breeze will kick up a bit with temperatures reaching into the low to mid 60's. Enjoy the 60s this afternoon because we wont see 60 again until the middle of next week!  It will be breezy and cool but dry for tonight's high school football games. You can keep the rain gear at home this time but make sure you dress for the chill.

A secondary cold front will move through overnight and this will bring in the coldest weather of the fall, so far.  Tomorrow will have a bit of March feel to it with a blend of sun and clouds and a chilly breeze.  Temperatures will reach into the middle 50's. There may be a sprinkle but that's about all.

The cold air will continue to pour into western Mass tomorrow night. This will allow temperatures to tumble into the 20s. There will likely be a thick frost or freeze. Temperatures should dip below freezing for several hours.

Sunday will be evening colder. It will be bright but cold with high temperatures only in the 40s. Sunday will likely have a December feel to it! Monday morning will be even colder with a hard freeze everywhere! This will certainly put an end to the growing season.  Temps will plunge into the lower 20's and perhaps even a few upper teens. The record low on Monday is 19 set back in 1978. Monday will remain bright but cold with highs near 50. However, hang in there. A mid-week warm up is expected with temperatures climbing closer to more seasonable levels by Tuesday afternoon.
