A critical Week 7 for high school football teams across Western Mass., with many teams trying to prove that they're playoff contenders. Anyone could tell you that the Agawam Brownies are contenders, but Chicopee Comp was hoping to spoil their perfect season.
The Colts hosted Friday night's match-up on Senior Night. They knew Agawam would come in with a strong rushing attack and an even stronger defense. But that didn't stop the Brownies from running all over the Colts, with Nick Scuderi contributing four touchdowns. Agawam held a 20-7 halftime lead, and came out with a 7-minute drive to start the third quarter. That ended in a touchdown pass from Troy Gallerani to Joe Oliver.
The Brownies controlled the clock with the run, using play-fakes and inside hand-offs to perfection. That included an option pitch from Gallerani to Austin Clapp which extended their lead. Comp answered with a touchdown run from Kyle Payner, but the damage was done. Agawam stays perfect with a 40-20 win.
In the AA Conference, a pivotal match-up between Holyoke and Minnechaug went back-and-forth, fueled by two high-octane quarterbacks. Andrew Peltier found Tim Girard early and often, including the game's first touchdown. He would add another to Raekwon Acevedo before the end of the half to give Holyoke a 23-15 lead. For the Falcons, however, Kyle Trombley orchestrated big plays when they mattered most. He ran for more than 190 yards, most of which came in the second half, including an 80-yard dash that broke the tie and gave Minnechaug the 30-23 win.
While the Falcons held on to second place, Central stayed unbeaten in the conference with a 40-13 win over Westfield, fueled by running back Tyreque Estrada-Crapps.
