Forest Park is home to the only other 'Eternal Flame' dedicated to the late president John F. Kennedy. The other is at John F. Kennedy's grave in the Arlington Cemetery.
Community leaders came together on Sunday to remember Kennedy and the lasting impact he had on politics.
"Having seen him on the day before the election on 1960, it's a memory not only do I treasure, but I think you can make the argument that there are still thousands of people who hold public offices across America because they were inspired by his example," said Congressman Richard Neal.
Congressman Neal said Kennedy was an elegant man and one with wit and humor.
"Just read that inaugural address and see what we lost in leadership. In a world that desperately needs leadership, we come here year after year for what he did and what he meant to this country of his," said the former Mayor of Springfield Charlie Ryan.
The gathering is held every year in honor of Kennedy.
