It's been a dream season for the Springfield Tigers. They went undefeated in their first season in the American Youth Football league and are the New England Champions. They're next stop is the national tournament in Orlando Florida the week of December 5th.
Parents and coaches met tonight to talk about raising the money to help the team get there.
Tommy Guy's son Brendan is on the team. He says, “It's a once in a lifetime opportunity for them to represent New England and Springfield and to potentially bring home a national championship. But more importantly just to have the experience of going to Florida, get on a plane, stay in a hotel room but also playing games with teams that are the best in their country in their age group.”
The team has to raise 20 thousand dollars to help pay for their travel, hotel, food and to register for the tournament. The boys are both excited and proud. “We get to represent Springfield”, says Brendan Guy, “and hopefully take a national championship home.”
The team has been training for the past four months. So it's taken a lot of hard work to defeat every team in New England. When it comes to the Tigers, William Watson says, it's all about team, adding, “We've all been playing since we were 5 years old so we have that little bond to us.”
But it's not all about football. Academics are just as important and these boys know that to do well on the field, you have to do well in school. William Watson is the team's coach and director and his son William also plays on the team. He says, “The kids are not only doing a good job on the football field, but they're doing a great job in the classroom as well, which is one of the things we stress.”
And his son William know it, saying, “If you don't have the academics, you can't play football in the future.”
The immediate future is Orlando Florida the first week in December. A Go Fund Me page has been set up for team.
