Sgt. John Delaney of the Springfield Police Department received an award tonight for his work in the community.
He was praised for his accomplishments, as the founding supervisor of the Springfield Street Crime Unit and for starting a gun buyback program, where he and fellow officers collected more than 300 guns in only a few hours.
Delaney was also recognized for his charitable work. He's helped raise thousands of dollars for organizations such as Christina's House and Ride to Remember, which honors fallen Springfield police officer Kevin Ambrose and Jose Torres of Westfield, as well as officers everywhere.
