Police are searching the Connecticut River in South Hadley near James St. for a missing 18-year-old woman from Chicopee. Officer Michael Wilk said police in South Hadley asked for assistance from the dive/boat team to check the riverbanks in the search for Brianna Cuoco.
Massachusetts State Police along with South Hadley, Chicopee and Holyoke police departments are working together to search for clues.
Helicopters and police canine units scoured the area while dive teams searched the river near the Vietnam Memorial Bridge.
Area residents say they are keeping a watchful eye as the search continues. “We will definitely be on the lookout,” said Jonathan Butler, of South Hadley.
Residents say that South Hadley is a close knit community, and that many people are doing their best to search for Cuoco. “Everybody takes their part when you live down here, to keep an eye on your backyard,” said Devin Quick, of South Hadley.
"We want to stress that there is no information suggesting any sightings in or near the river. This is all a normal part of this type of investigation and we want to request and warn people do not go down to, or on, the riverbanks, especially with the pending storm," said Wilk.
Cuoco went missing early Monday morning. She was last seen in the area of Bridge Street in South Hadley around 1 a.m.
Cuoco is 5'4'' tall and weighs about 100 pounds. She was last seen wearing a brown winter coat and brown boots.
If you have any information about her whereabouts, you are asked to call police at (413)-594-1735.
