The Big Y SurPRIZE Squad from Western Mass News was out and about again today. Today, the team helped out a deserving veteran who was nominated for a surprise.
Precision Auto Repair in West Springfield was on board to help go the extra mile for today's mission - a surprise for Ricardo Cumba, a Westfield resident and proud member of the Army National Guard.
Cumba didn't know we were waiting for him to walk through the door. We played it cool and asked if we could interview him for a news story about car repairs.
"I have an ABS light that needs to be fixed, so I trust these guys a lot. They're very nice and I always come here. [Have you been having car problems for a while or did the light just come on?] Maybe about a month or two. [so you've been waiting a little bit] Yeah, just so I can get some money," Cumba explained.
Cumba added, "These things are sudden when something goes wrong with your car. [How tough is it to fork up the bill when something like this happens?] Well, I have two kids and one on the way, so my main purpose here is to support them, pretty much getting them to school. My vehicle is really important for that, so I have to wait to get the money to support them."
After the brief interview, Cumba led us to the car so we could record video for our "so-called" story.
Once in the garage, there was a solution to getting his car repaired - the Big Y SurPRIZE Squad.
We chipped in to help pay for half of the repair bill and James Stephenson from Precision Auto Repair went one step further.
"We know about your family and your service and we appreciate everything that you do, so we felt you needed another $500, so we matched what the Surprize Squad was going to give. This will pay for your full service today to make sure your car is ready to go, so you an take care of your family and your children," Stephenson explained
"I don't even have any words. I appreciate it..thank you. I really can use it, thank you, thank you," said Cumba.
However, we weren't done yet.
"Since Big Y Surprize Squad donated the $500, we want to match that and take all of the money for Ricardo's repairs today and for $1,000 and donate it to the Shriners Center," said Stephenson.
The Shriners plan on putting the money towards a new x-ray machine.
