Record Lows Expected Into Wednesday Morning

Posted: Updated:
SPRINGFIELD, MA (WGGB/WSHM) -

It was a bright and breezy day, but the sunshine was ineffective for the temperatures. We saw temperatures stuck in the 30s all day. Much, if not all, of the snow was melted pretty quickly by the strong April sunshine. The sun angle is equal to that of early September. Despite the cold, the sun was working hard to get rid of winter. By the way, the average high for today is 54 so we'll end up about 18 degrees below normal!

As high pressure moves in overnight, the winds will diminish and this will set us up for a frigid night. Readings will drop into the lower to middle teens by morning. The record low for tomorrow is 18 set in 1943. We have a very good chance of breaking it. It wouldn’t surprise me to see a few single digit overnight lows. Certainly as cold as some of the coldest starts we saw this winter. As a side note, our all-time record cold temperature for April is 8°. If the conditions set up correctly, Westover ARB *may* make a run for it.

Temperatures will bounce back a bit tomorrow afternoon with highs in the 40s. Sunshine will give way to some afternoon cloudiness as our next storm system starts to move in.

The moderating trending will continue into Thursday, however it will come some soaking rains. Temperature top off in the mid 50s as the low pressure system draws warmer air from the south.

We start drying out as we head in to Friday, but unfortunately we are blustery and colder once again. We may even see a few snow flurries across the valley, more conversation than anything.

The April chill will continue into the weekend with temperatures near 40 and overnight lows down into the 20s. Overall temperatures will stay at or below normal for the next 7 to 10 days.
