Cool weather and scattered showers didn’t stop walkers from lacing up their shoes for the greater Holyoke and Chicopee Relay for Life.
Participants could be found at Chicopee Comprehensive High School’s outdoor track on Saturday morning. Many were bundled but energized for this year’s ‘Passport to Relay’, a theme that recognizes that people from around the world are battling cancer.
"This year we relayed around the world so we went to Brazil, we went to Italy, we just did Texas and Louisiana, right now I think they are on Massachusetts," says Kristel Chouinard, the event’s organizer.
Chouinard says they raised several thousand dollars more than last year for a total of $39,000.
The theme is a fun one, and there are certainly lighthearted moments during the walk which starts on Friday and goes through the overnight hours. Yet at its core the relay celebrates survivors honors those who are still fighting, and remember those who have passed.”
