The ingredients are coming together across the mid-West to bring dangerous weather conditions to that area this afternoon. A strong area of low pressure cutting into a warm, moist, southerly flow at the surface and a fast moving jet stream at high levels of the atmosphere will work together to trigger explosive thunderstorm development this afternoon into this evening. A Severe Weather outbreak is likely with widespread damaging wind gusts, tornadoes and large hail.
The Storm Prediction Center out of Norman, Oklahoma has placed much of the Mid-West including Chicago-land, Indianapolis, Columbus and Fort Wayne, under a Moderate Risk for severe weather. Areas from northeast Iowa into northern Illinois, southwest lower Michigan, north-central Indiana and parts of western Ohio will be under the gun this afternoon and evening for severe weather.
This system will weaken as it moves into the Mid-Atlantic tonight into tomorrow but will still bring the area scattered storms some of which will be strong to severe.
