Two Chicopee residents are facing charges after trying to shoplift thousands of dollars in merchandise from a local store.

Chicopee Police Officer Michael Wilk said that around 8 p.m. Tuesday, police were called to Home Depot for a shoplifting complaint.

Officers arrived and spoke to store employees, who said that they had been conducting surveillance on a man, later identified as 36-year-old John Duncan of Chicopee, who was reportedly known to have shoplifted from their store.

Wilk added that store employees were able to stop Duncan and another party, identified as 40-year-old Jennifer Matlasz of Chicopee.  Police then learned that Duncan and Matlasz allegedly tried to conceal over $2,225 in power tools and leave the store.

Duncan and Matlasz were placed under arrest and charged with shoplifting over $100.

Wilk noted that Duncan's arrest on Tuesday was his 11th shoplifting arrest.

Duncan was held on $2,450 bail pending his arraignment Wednesday in Chicopee District Court.  Matlasz was released on $540 bail
