SPRINGFIELD, MA (WGGB/WSHM) -

The start of the 2016 high school football season was highlighted by a last-minute victory, some breakout performances, and some statement victories. Week 1 began under a new division and league format for western Mass. football, a change made in hopes of enhancing competition at every level.

Two teams that were moved in the off-season squared off in Week 1's biggest match-up. The Agawam Brownies traveled to East Longmeadow to take on the Spartans, looking for redemption in 2016 after their heartbreaking loss to Chicopee Comp in the Division IV Western Mass Championship last season. The Brownies are looking to running back Chris Morassi this season to carry the load in their always-potent running game. Friday night in East Longmeadow, he did just that. Morassi dominated in the first half, scoring two of Agawam's three touchdowns.

Morassi didn't wasn't just a nightmare for the Spartans defense, he was a headache for East Longmeadow quarterback Tristan Longmoore. Morassi had two first-half interceptions, which kept the Spartans offense at bay. Longmoore was able to find Eli Johnson for a big gain, which the Spartans thought had gone for a touchdown. Instead he was marked out of bounds and the Spartans were held scoreless in the first half. They rallied in the second, but still fell to Agawam, 41-34.

The Spartans' cross-town rivals Longmeadow appeared to be faring better in the first half of their game against West Springfield. The Lancers carried a 14-7 lead well into the 3rd quarter, when they forced a turnover on downs by stopping the Terriers on 4th and goal. They were hoping to extend their lead, but instead Longmeadow quarterback Joey Cosenzi was picked off by West Springfield's Jack LaBranche who took the pick back for a touchdown. The game-changing play tied the game 14-14, but the back-and-forth continued. In the final minute, West Springfield quarterback Tylor Rochefort found Kyle Beane for the game-winning score. Longmeadow falls to West Springfield, 21-14.
