Week 3: Friday Football Fever

Posted: Updated:

Several teams have gotten out to fast starts in western Mass. high school football, but all of them were put to the test in Week 3. That included two undefeated teams squaring off in one of the biggest rivalry games of the year, the 'Sword Game' in Chicopee.

Chicopee Comp came to Szot Park to take on Chicopee High, and put on an incredible game for a huge crowd. Comp quarterback Trevor Johnson led the charge in the second half, running for two touchdowns and throwing for another, to tight end Josiah Pernell. It was a back-and-forth battle all night long, however, thanks to Danial Matta and Issaiah Jackson putting up two big scores for the Pacers. As the game was winding down, Comp held a 28-21 lead, but on a 3rd down run, they fumbled, giving Chicopee another chance. The Pacers would face a fourth down and 1, and appeared to come up short, but after a measurement, Chicopee was given the first down. Quarterback Matt Swenor took a shot at the end zone, but it was picked off by Comp's Corey Heath, securing another Sword Game victory.

Meanwhile, in Springfield, Westfield hoped to continue its improbable start to the season, taking on the Central Golden Eagles. Unlike their match-up against Agawam in Week 2, the Bombers were not up to the task. Deandre Goldson led Central with four touchdowns and quarterback Tank Walker added some dazzling plays to give Central a 39-6 victory.

The break-out team of the year thus far withstood another test in Week 3, as Northampton took on South Hadley. The Tigers started things off with a rushing touchdown from senior Jason Fernandes. Northampton would answer, thanks to running back Elijah Davis. He had a big run which set up a touchdown pass he caught from Ryan Bredin. Northampton's defense held strong, for a 12-7 victory.
