Week 4: Friday Football Fever

Posted: Updated:

Some of the best high school teams in western Mass. were tested on the road in Week 4, as many rivalries were renewed in the start of league play for many teams. Most of the top teams came away with convincing wins, but one contender was upended on the road.

The Central Golden Eagles were flying high on two huge victories heading into Week 4, when they traveled to Longmeadow to take on the Lancers. Despite plenty of offensive weapons on both sides, it was a defensive battle all game long. The only score of the night came in the 4th quarter, when Longmeadow's Nik Horowitz broke a run for a touchdown, giving the Lancers a 6-0 lead. DeAndre Goldson responded with a long kick return to set up the Golden Eagles for a game-tying chance in the red zone. Aaron Moses Williams led Central down to the 4 yard-line, when the Golden Eagles had four chances to punch it in. Longmeadow's defense made a stand, forcing a 4th down. Williams' pass fell incomplete, and the Lancers took over. They were able to run the clock out to get their first win of the year 6-0, to improve to 1-2.

Fellow AA Conference contenders Chicopee Comp and Agawam each earned convincing wins on the road. Chicopee Comp was led by quarterback Trevor Johnson and wide receiver Mason Labonte, as the pair connected for two big touchdowns. The Colts defense held strong to earn a 32-8 win over Minnechaug in Wilbraham. Agawam, meanwhile, was led by its tandem of running backs Chris Morassi and Jared Durocher, who broke long touchdown runs and helped the Brownies pull away from Holyoke for a 35-0 victory.

In the Suburban South, Northampton kept their undefeated start going as they kept East Longmeadow winless with a 30-0 win. South Hadley proved they were up to the task against Hoosac Valley, also earning a shutout, 35-0 win.
