Week 5 featured another thrilling match-up of AA opponents, as the Longmeadow Lancers tried to take down another of the area's top teams. Fresh off their shocking 6-0 victory over Central in Week 4, the Lancers traveled to Chicopee Comp to take on the Colts.
As he has all season long, Chicopee Comp quarterback Trevor Johnson led the Colts passing offense with efficiency, but it was his team's final drive that made the difference. Johnson hit Corey Heath, Josiah Pernell, and Mason Labonte for touchdowns, before being hurt on a second-half sack. With Johnson out of the game, a fumble led to a defensive touchdown for Longmeadow's David Schwartz. After being attended to on the field, Johnson made it back into the game to lead a last-second drive to help Chicopee Comp earn a 27-21 victory.
Comp's fellow AA challengers Central and Agawam both came away with big victories, as the Golden Eagles topped Holyoke 49-7 and the Brownies handled Minnechaug in their later-than-expected home opener, 47-14.
The most highly anticipated game in the Suburban South featured two 3-1 teams, in Westfield and West Springfield. The Bombers pulled away quickly in the first half, thanks to long touchdown runs from quarterback Austin St. Pierre and another touchdown from Running back Wilton Royal. Westfield's defense dominated the day, getting a first-half interception from Zach Adam, second-half picks from Connor Baldaraso and Scott Walsh, and two fumble recoveries by Connor Calabrese. Westfield rolls 44-0.
Elsewhere across the area, Chicopee earned a convincing victory against a Berkshire county opponent, Commerce earned its first victory, and Palmer remained undefeated.
