DENVER (AP/Meredith) — A 16-year-old girl was charged with first-degree murder after she suffocated her newborn baby with a rock, according to the Denver District Attorney's Office.

Alaya Dotson was arrested in September, two days after her daughter was pronounced dead at a hospital,  KDVR reports.

The baby was just a few hours old when she died. Court documents state that Dotson's mother called 911 and said her daughter had just delivered a baby and that the child was "on the ground in the backyard of their residence."

Dotson told police she didn't know she was pregnant, according to a probable cause statement.

The teen reportedly delivered her baby in the bathroom and took the infant outside afterward. She told detectives the baby fell out of her arms when her mom walked outside and startled her.

Dotson then admitted to picking up a rock that was on the ground, putting it inside the baby’s mouth, and pushing down her throat, court records state.

The 16-year-old will be tried as an adult. A preliminary court hearing is scheduled for Jan. 12.
